Italian State Railways – Service de Luxe
RAILWAY communications in Italy have been greatly improved and have been raised by the Administration of the State to the height of modem perfection and comfort. All the main lines have a service of direct and express trains, and from many of the principal towns direct international communications with Marseilles, Paris, London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Berlin, Vienna, Budapest, etc., have been established. The trains on the lines communicating with the principal centres of Italy all contain sleeping and dining cars. The express and direct trains are all corridor trains, and guards and railway officials, whose duty it is to see to the cleanliness of the carriages during the journey, travel on each train. Some lines are worked by means of electric power, this system constituting the first and best experiment of the kind which has yet been obtained in the world. The service with foreign countries is undertaken by means of international express trains and the Custom-House officials make their visits on the trains without in any way disturbing the travellers.
The principal European trains de luxe pass through Italy:
The Egyptian Express, from Berlin to Naples, where the steamship connection with Egypt or from Egypt is made.
The Berlin-Bologna-Florence-Rome-Naples-Palermo-Taormina Express.
The Berlin-Tirol-Venice-Bologna-Florence-Rome Express.
The Lloyd Riviera Express from Berlin, Altonge and Amsterdam to Genoa.
The North-South Brenner Express, from Berlin to Verona-Milan-Genoa, Alassio, San Remo, Ospedaletti, Bordighera, Ventimiglia, Nice, Cannes.
The Paris-Turin-Genoa-Florence-Rome-Naples-Palermo-Taormina Express.
The Peninsular and Oriental Express, from London to Turin-Bologna-Ancona-Brindisi, which runs in connection with the service to India.
The Cannes- Nice-Bordighera-Ospedaletti-San Remo-Porto Maurizio-Alassio-Pegli-Genoa-Nervi-Santa Margherita- Rapallo-Pisa-Florence-Rome Express.
The St. Petersburg-Vienna-Venice-Milan-Genoa-Alassio-San Remo-Ospedaletti-Bordighera-Nice-Cannes Express.
The Simplon Express, from London-Paris-Pallanza-Stresa-Milan-Verona-Venice-Trieste.
The Vienna-Tirol-Milan-Genoa-Ligurian Riviera-Nice-Cannes Express.
The Vienna-Bologna-Florence-Rome-Naples-Palermo-Taormina Express.

IF a trip through Italy presents panoramic attractions and visions of natural beauty to the tourist, and if a short stay in the “Land of Sunshine” can give the traveller an enthusiastic idea of what Italy really is, the reader must necessarily think what marvellous and what vast fields of intellectual enjoyment are reserved to those persons, who, provided with means and not being obliged to hurry back to their own country, can linger and travel in the various regions of Italy, or devote themselves to the study of art in the one country sacred to art and culture. Health-seekers, too, will derive great benefits from the climatic effects of this country, which, together with its art treasures and its beauties and vigorous and varied tropical vegetation also possesses a delicious ever springlike temperature and an infinite series of health resort and health giving spring. There is no other country in the world like Italy which can instil new life into persons amidst such scenes of beauty and culture.
Those persons also, who are fond of sport, have in Italy an ideal choice: fox-hunting, tennis, foot-ball, cricket and golf clubs, skating, etc., in fact every branch of sport is cultivated in the principal Italian centres; yachting and rowing can be indulged in at all the seaside towns on the delicious coasts and on the placid lakes; winter sports, which claim thousands of partisans, offer special attractions in the marvellous alpine zones, where each year races are held for skis, ski-kiöring, skeleton bobsleighs, etc., and finally, in Italy, which was the cradle of alpinism, there are the immense chains of the Alps, containing Mt. Blanc, Mt. Rosa and the Dolomites, the Appennines, the Gran Sasso, and Etna in the south, all of which are colossal peaks most venerated by alpinists and mountaineers.
It is not possible to give an idea, not even a very vague one, of what Italy really is; this may be possible with regard to other countries, but not so with the “Land of Beauty.“ Every city, every little town or village, has such art attractions, such visions of beauty, such climatic qualities, that the present little book would not be sufficient even to enumerate them!

Private Cars
The Railway Administration places several different types of Private Cars at the disposal of the public. The latest patterns are those with 4 axles and are about l8 meters in length, containing 12 compartments, decorated and furnished with all the luxuries of railroad travel thus far conceived. The Private Cars of the above mentioned type (see illustration) contain: a vestibule; a large sitting room almost 8 sq. mts. with a divan which can be transformed into a bed; a corridor leading to: two one-bedded rooms, a toilet room, two half compartments with divans which can be used as beds, a w.c., and a servants‘ compartment with a divan capable of being made into two beds. In this latter compartment there are culinary utensils, cupboards, heating apparatus, etc. The beds therefore number 9 in all. Also, and independent at the end of the carriage, there is the compartment of the guard who is in charge of the car.
The tariff for the hire of the Private Cars varies according to the type. We give on page 10 the prices of those with two or three axles, as well as for the more modern ones with 4 axles furnished with all modem improvements and comforts as mentioned above. Upon payment being made according to the tariff on page 10, 10 persons can have accomodation in a car of two or three axles and 15 persons in a car of four axles; each extra person pays respectively 1/10 or 1/15 of the kilometric price indicated. The request for such cars and the itinerary desired to be covered, should be sent to the Station Master at a sufficiently early date to enable adequate arrangements to be made. The car, which is really a small hotel on wheels, with steam- heating, ventilators. etc., remains at the disposal of the hirer for the whole period at the journey.

Small Privates Cars
The cars with small salons consist of ordinary 1st Class compartments and compartements de luxe. The most recent type of these cars, as seen from the following diagram, has: the central part, independent from the rest of the carriage constituting the small salon with a divan transformable into a bed; a half compartment with a sofa which can be made into two beds; and a toilet cabinet. At both ends of the carriage are two ordinary 1st Class compartments. There is a corridor running the whole length of the carriage which is tastefully and comfortably furnished. It is illuminated with electric light and has also an electric ventilator. These small salons, which have accomodation for three beds, are at the disposition of travellers who do not wish to hire an entire Private Car. Upon payment of the tariff, 6 persons can have accomodation in a small salon—each extra person pays 1/6 of the kilometric price indicated. The tariff for the hire of these compartements de luxe will be found on page 16.

Ordinary 1st Class Compartments
The ordinary 1st Class compartments from part of all the trains circulating upon the permanent way of the State Railways. The compartments, although having intercommunicating carriages, are independent one from the other; they have very comfortable, soft upholstered divans in red velvet, are all illuminated with electric light and also have lights behind the seats to enable people wishing to read, to do so with every degree of comfort. The 2nd Class compartments also have every modern comfort and are furnished with soft upholstered divans in velvet. The tariffs for travellers and luggage in use upon the State Railways vary, that is, the greater the distance travelled the lower is the tariff. They are quite reasonable, especially for tourists, because long journeys can be made at a very low cost. We give an example (page 20), indicating the prices for the express trains for distances of 50, 100, 150 Km., etc., up to 1,550 Km. The last mentioned price represents the maximum and is applicable also to journeys of more than 1,550 Km. These differential tickets (see page 20) are valid 1 day for each 100 Km. and give the holder the right to break the journey at intermediate stations as follows: once during a journey of 300 Km., twice up to 600 Km., three times up to 900 Km., four times up to 1,000, and five times for a journey of more than 1,000 Km. The prices for luggage, as has been stated, are also differential and vary from a minimum of frs. 0.75 for every 10 kilogrammes for transport of not more than 158 Km. up to a maximum of frs.2.85, for every 10 kilogrammes for distances from 1,450 Km. and over. The Railway Administration also issue a series of tickets for circular, combined and combination tours available for special lengths of time and at special prices. Special season tickets for determined regions and zones, valid from 15 days to one year, are, from every point of view, very cheap and reasonable. There are also issued many special combination tickets by which the journey can be commenced from a station on the frontier, and others which commence their itinerary from one of the ports where the transatlantic liners disembark. We give a few examples of these tickets at the end of this booklet. Travellers who come to Italy from another European country will find the International Combinable Tickets of great use. They are issued at reduced prices in the form of a little book.

Navigation Services between the Continent and Sicily and Sardegna
The Administration of the State Railways, besides the service of ferry-boats across the Straits of Messina, for the passage of the entire trains de luxe and of carriages and wagons in the direct service from the Continent to Sicily, runs other lines of navigation between Naples and Sicily and between Civitavecchia and Sardinia. Every care has been taken to make these passages by sea as interesting and pleasant as possible, and the Administation have spared nothing, in arranging these services for the convenience of travellers. The accompagning illustrations will give an idea of the different types of salons and compartements de luxe which contain all modern comforts. The steamers performing this service are de luxe and have 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class accommodation and various salons. The 1st Class is luxuriantly fitted similar to the transatlantic liners; there are also apartments and cabins de luxe at the disposal of travellers. The apartments consist of a small salon, a cabin with one bed, a divan also transformable into a bed, and a toilet room. The excess-fare is frs. 50.30 for the Sicilian lines, and frs. 30.20 for the Sardinian lines, plus the price of as many 1st Class tickets as the number of persons who make the journey. For the use of the one-bedded cabins de luxe, each person pays, besides the price of the ticket, an excess-fare equal to 50 per cent of the ordinary 1st Class ticket on any line. The fleet of the State Railways is composed of double-decked steamers, all of which are of recent construction. The speed of those used on the Naples-Palermo line is 20 knots the hour, and those of the Civitavecchia-Golfo Aranci line have a velocity of 15 knots. The passage from Naples to Palermo is made in 9 hours, and from Civitavecchia to Golfo Aranci in 8 hours.

The State Railways have, for several years, adopted special wagons for the transport of automobiles also on the direct trains. These wagons, which will hold two automobiles, are padded inside and have a series of rings to secure the load in a manner to prevent all friction and shifting. The loading of automobiles is simplicity itself, it being possible for the latter lo enter the wagon by means cl their own engines, as in a garage.

Special Transport Wagons for Automobiles
The transport of automobiles with these special wagons is made at a low tariff to enable the most enjoyable automobile excursions to be made, with train service combined, at a relatively low cost. Travellers who bring their automobiles from America or other countries will find these Wagons ready on their arrival at Genoa or Naples or at the confines of the country, and can therefore transport their automobiles intact to the residence of their choice. The general automobile transport tariffs for G. V. (fast freight) are frs. 0.525 per Km. for each vehicle if only one is loaded upon one wagon; if two are loaded upon the same wagon the price for each vehicle is frs. 0.408 per Km.—plus, in every case, the fixed rate of frs. 3.50 per automobile. If the transport is effected at P. V. (slow freight) the price is frs. 0.363 per Km. or frs. 0.259 per Km. each automobile if two vehicles are loaded upon the same wagon— plus the fixed rate of frs.2.07 per automobile. For the transport of automobiles upon special wagons of which we have spoken above, the prices indicated are raised 10 per cent. When the transport of automobiles by direct trains is requested, another excess-rate is charged.
